This fits

Yes, I know I shouldn't hold a grudge but when I saw this I nearly choked. Some things come onto your life at the most appropriate time. don't they?

Caution, I'm whining

This freaking Hurricane is screwing everything up. Well except our weather, that I have to say is rather nice.

My sister and her hubby were supposed to arrive yesterday from the UK, they got bumped from many o flight. My sister and her hubby were meant to arrive today from the UK the got bumped from many o flight. The final kick in the teeth came when all flights to New York City were cancelled until further notice and all NY passengers were moved onto flights to Miami and or Orlando.

My sister decided she was giving up, they had no idea where their luggage was but once it was located they were flying off to sunny parts unknown with their luggage full of Jelly for Rosie and chocolate for me and a couple of books for Lily. Sigh.

Late this afternoon my niece sent me a text that said, booked on Virgin flight meet them at the airport at 18. 40. I sent back one word: TODAY?

I then realised it couldn't be today as that would make their flight all of 3 hours.

Thankfully I hadn't told Rosie anything about them coming. Lily had to find out when a swim meet interfered with the visit and she needed to make a tough call. She was devastated. My girl is dealing with some pretty heavy news at the moment and this blow on top of it was pretty rough.

I can't wait to see their faces tomorrow night when they get home from swimming and I am sitting here with their Auntie and Uncle!

Freaking storm. But you can't keep a M*&^y down! We are like Timex watches we take a licking and keep on ticking

I saw this sign in a very eclectic little shop on Saturday and just fell in love with it. It's almost a blogger code of conduct.

Involuntarily winking at people

At 8.20 this morning I decided that my day was not going very well and that it could only get better from this point out.

After I drop  the girlies off at school on Thursdays I head straight for the grocery store but as were were snaking our way through the drop off line I realised I had forgotten the shopping list and would have to go home. It's really not a big deal as we live super close to their school but the traffic at that time of day is ghastly.

Once home I ran into the house and as I was running I noticed that my feet or rather my shoes were making 2 different sounds. Bummer, I must have worn through the heel on my favourite black sandals. First the shopping list and now my favourite shoes.

Thankfully I looked down.

This is for you Val.
Close, but as they say, no cigar.
The shopping list was a blessing in disguise because as much as nobody would have noticed the shoes they would have noticed that one shoe made a clop-clop noise and one was silent. I would have sounded like a mono-pod.

So off I drove in matching shoes right into the thick of traffic and then it started, the involuntary twitching in my right eye. This happens to me when I am uber stressed. It either starts in my lip making me look a little like Elvis with that freakish lip thingy that he did or it happens on my eye lid making me wink at people. Today was my lucky day and it hit my eye. So I walk into the supermarket with my head held low and someone immediately says hi. I look up and wink at them. Egads.

I have a feeling that today is going to be stellar day. The kids are going to be walking 3 feet behind me pretending that they don't actually know me and this evening when we have a PTSA event well I can just imagine how much fun it is going to be with the oddball parent that winked at everyone.

It's a damned good job I have the personality that can pull this kind of crap off. Sheesh if this level of stress keeps up until December I'll look like I have Tourettes.

Sinking feeling

When you are a kid you just can't wait to grow up. Now I want to be a kid again.

I want to run and hide and pretend that yesterday afternoon American Airlines didn't release it's huge furlough and termination numbers. I want to pretend that on December 16th, just 9 lousy days before Christmas 1440 people from Miami aren't going to be unemployed. Anyone hired after 1997 is either terminated  due to the company subcontracting their jobs or being furloughed. Ugh.

Someone wake me up on December 17 please. Until then I am going into denial. If you were hired prior to those dates you have to worry about being bumped by someone who has more seniority than you. That means just because you have your job, by the grace of your hire date, someone with higher seniority might want it so, SEE YA.

Until then we know nothing. The company isn't talking to it's employees. It's all a big hurry up and wait game. It's not looking good. 2 days ago it was an entirely different story.

I better stop writing now as I am about to drop the F bomb.

It's not all bad

When I talk about Lily's swimming I spend a lot of time focusing on the boring hours that are spent sitting poolside. I've decided to focus on something a little more positive. Meet my new positive focal point  ~snort.

It appears that all of us Mums are changing our focal point.
I might take up swimming in the fall, I think it would be good for me. All the mums are considering it.

A letter to my employer

Dear Me

I have always loved working for you and even though this position has presented many challenges they have never come close to those presented this week. Really I can't imagine that I signed up for any of it.
Please note that effective immediately, I quit.

Sincerely,

Me, myself and I

I don't very often talk about my work, I can't. It's confidential and what can I say that would be interesting to any of you? After the last couple of days I have decided that I am resigning.

Yesterday I arrived at my usual Wednesday morning appointment, 3 minutes early because that's how, "Little Old Man In the Gables" likes things done, and when he came to the door he said, "I don't think you should come in, well maybe you should but just stand right here because the bees are back and they are swarming." I looked beyond him into his beautiful Florida room and all I could see were hundreds of bees, everyfreakingwhere.

About 4 years ago Little Old Man In the Gables, (that takes to long to write I'll call him Bob) had bees build a hive in the front of his house. He left them there for a while until a nosey neighbour noticed them and made a stink. Bob is a kind man and won't hurt anything. Since bees are dying at an alarming rate he wanted to find someone that would remove his bees without harming them. It took him a few weeks but he was able to make it happen.

The bees came back about a year ago but they moved into his house, I'm still not sure where in his house even though he has told me I just don't "get" where.  Every now and again they would swarm into the Florida room, not often and not many. To be on the safe side  I insisted suggested that when he was at his doctors office he tell the doctor about them in case he ever got stung. Thankfully he listens to me and he told him. The Dr. gave him an epi-pen just in case.

Bob is old and can get quite cranky but he is a lovely and very kind man he has been my client for 15 years. As the months have passed the bees have stung him and each time the reaction gets worse. Each Wednesday there is a new sting and it is bad. Recently I have really scolded him about getting rid of the damned bees. He had called the original man but he came saw what where the hive was and never came back. I then scoured the internet trying to find a kind bee company. I found 3. Hah, this time he had no choice but to deal with them. I left him the information and left there knowing he would get help. Wrong. When I went back he told me that the company said he would have to move out of that part of his house, we would have to move all the upholstered furniture out for 3 months because any stray bees  that were left behind could possibly use the soft furnishings to build another hive. If you saw his home you would see what a massive upheaval and undertaking this would be for a young person let alone for an older chap. It is out of the question.  2 weeks ago he had been stung on the face, last week on the leg and his foot and leg were so swollen. That was it, I got really stern with him and told him if he didn't do something soon I would be forced to use my "mummy voice" with him. He agreed he had to and said he had reached a point where he didn't care what happened to the damned bees. I was shocked and figured he didn't mean it.

That brings us to this week when he was worried about me even going in. As I stood there he was in his Florida room vacuuming the bees up with the long hose of his Hoover. If it wasn't so dangerous I would have laughed my head off. Finally the last one was sucked up the tube and I was able to get to work. Of course I uncovered his most recent stings! I lectured him. He agreed. I offered no help. This morning I had to call my bug guy cos I saw an ant in the girls bathroom and I decided to ask if he knows a bee guy. His response, I do bees but I kill them. I explained the situation, how temperamental  my client can be and he said he could have someone there within the hour. I told him to give me a few minutes. I called Bob and told him. I expected him to say no but instead he said just arrange it. I thought to myself why me they're your bees but I called Dr. Death back and crossed my fingers.

Late this afternoon Bob called: "I have no bees and I really don't know how to thank you. They are all gone in one day and it wasn't even all that bad, I only just found the cat but he is fine" He was talking so fast. He was relieved and so happy. He even told me that when the guy called to say he was just 5 minutes away he told him he had changed his mind and not to bother coming. He was convinced it was going to be a huge job causing a huge upheaval in his life that would go on for days. Dr.Death refused to back down. He basically sweet talked his way to Bobs house and once Bob met him he liked him, thank goodness and let him in and showed him where they were coming in or where he thought they were coming in. In no time at all it was taken of.

He didn't save the bees this time and I am sure in a couple of weeks he'll be a bit sad about it but it was getting so dangerous and he really is too old to deal with all that fuss.

I'm really happy he is safe again. But I am not a bee keeper, or a dog trainer. My job has taken on a life of it's own but one thing is for sure, it's never dull.

I didn't kill it

I am not known for my green thumb. I think I could possibly kill fake plants. I don't know what i do to them but they die. I have managed to kill two lawns, completely. I was so mad when the second one died that I seeded the whole thing by hand myself but that one died also which I suppose brings the total to three, not two.

Last year we planted the top off of a pineapple that we had eaten and I really hoped that it would grow. The plant itself grew and grew. I tried to avoid it because it is when I offer my nurturing touch that things head south. This is my little plant today,

The little brother.

I am so proud of it, it did this all by itself. Out front we have another one but that must be the red headed step child cos it isn't doing anything at all and they were all planted at the same time.

(thankfully I have better luck with children)

Words that touch your heart.

50 Rules for Dads of Daughters {by Michael Mitchell}

1. Love her mom. Treat her mother with respect, honor, and a big heaping spoonful of public displays of affection. When she grows up, the odds are good she’ll fall in love with and marry someone who treats her much like you treated her mother. Good or bad, that’s just the way it is. I’d prefer good.

2. Always be there. Quality time doesn’t happen without quantity time. Hang out together for no other reason than just to be in each other’s presence. Be genuinely interested in the things that interest her. She needs her dad to be involved in her life at every stage. Don’t just sit idly by while she add years to her… add life to her years.
3. Save the day. She’ll grow up looking for a hero. It might as well be you. She’ll need you to come through for her over and over again throughout her life. Rise to the occasion. Red cape and blue tights optional.
4. Savor every moment you have together. Today she’s crawling around the house in diapers, tomorrow you’re handing her the keys to the car, and before you know it, you’re walking her down the aisle. Some day soon, hanging out with her old man won’t be the bees knees anymore. Life happens pretty fast. You better cherish it while you can.
5. Pray for her. Regularly. Passionately. Continually.
6. Buy her a glove and teach her to throw a baseball. Make her proud to throw like a girl… a girl with a wicked slider.
7. She will fight with her mother. Choose sides wisely.

8. Go ahead. Buy her those pearls.

9. Of course you look silly playing peek-a-boo. You should play anyway.

10. Enjoy the wonder of bath time.

11. There will come a day when she asks for a puppy. Don’t over think it. At least one time in her life, just say, “Yes.”

12. It’s never too early to start teaching her about money. She will still probably suck you dry as a teenager… and on her wedding day.
13. Make pancakes in the shape of her age for breakfast on her birthday. In a pinch, donuts with pink sprinkles and a candle will suffice.
14. Buy her a pair of Chucks as soon as she starts walking. She won’t always want to wear matching shoes with her old man.
15. Dance with her. Start when she’s a little girl or even when she’s a baby. Don’t wait ‘til her wedding day.
16. Take her fishing. She will probably squirm more than the worm on your hook. That’s OK.

17. Learn to say no. She may pitch a fit today, but someday you’ll both be glad you stuck to your guns.

18. Tell her she’s beautiful. Say it over and over again. Someday an animated movie or “beauty” magazine will try to convince her otherwise.
19. Teach her to change a flat. A tire without air need not be a major panic inducing event in her life. She’ll still call you crying the first time it happens.

20. Take her camping. Immerse her in the great outdoors. Watch her eyes fill with wonder the first time she sees the beauty of wide open spaces. Leave the iPod at home.

21. Let her hold the wheel. She will always remember when daddy let her drive.

22. She’s as smart as any boy. Make sure she knows that.

23. When she learns to give kisses, she will want to plant them all over your face. Encourage this practice.
24. Knowing how to eat sunflower seeds correctly will not help her get into a good college. Teach her anyway.

25. Letting her ride on your shoulders is pure magic. Do it now while you have a strong back and she’s still tiny.
26. It is in her nature to make music. It’s up to you to introduce her to the joy of socks on a wooden floor.
27. If there’s a splash park near your home, take her there often. She will be drawn to the water like a duck to a puddle.
29. If her mom enrolls her in swim lessons, make sure you get in the pool too. Don’t be intimidated if there are no other dads there. It’s their loss.

30. Never miss her birthday. In ten years she won’t remember the present you gave her. She will remember if you weren’t there.
31. Teach her to roller skate. Watch her confidence soar.
32. Let her roll around in the grass. It’s good for her soul. It’s not bad for yours either.

33. Take her swimsuit shopping. Don’t be afraid to veto some of her choices, but resist the urge to buy her full-body beach pajamas.
34. Somewhere between the time she turns three and her sixth birthday, the odds are good that she will ask you to marry her. Let her down gently.
35. She’ll probably want to crawl in bed with you after a nightmare. This is a good thing.
36. Few things in life are more comforting to a crying little girl than her father’s hand. Never forget this.

37. Introduce her to the swings at your local park. She’ll squeal for you to push her higher and faster. Her definition of “higher and faster” is probably not the same as yours. Keep that in mind.

38. When she’s a bit older, your definition of higher and faster will be a lot closer to hers. When that day comes, go ahead… give it all you’ve got.
39. Holding her upside down by the legs while she giggles and screams uncontrollably is great for your biceps. WARNING: She has no concept of muscle fatigue.

40. She might ask you to buy her a pony on her birthday. Unless you live on a farm, do not buy her a pony on her birthday. It’s OK to rent one though.

41. Take it easy on the presents for her birthday and Christmas. Instead, give her the gift of experiences you can share together.
42. Let her know she can always come home. No matter what.
43. Remember, just like a butterfly, she too will spread her wings and fly some day. Enjoy her caterpillar years.

44. Write her a handwritten letter every year on her birthday. Give them to her when she goes off to college, becomes a mother herself, or when you think she needs them most.
45. Learn to trust her. Gradually give her more freedom as she gets older. She will rise to the expectations you set for her.

46. When in doubt, trust your heart. She already does.
47. When your teenage daughter is upset, learning when to engage and when to back off will add years to YOUR life. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

48. Ice cream covers over a multitude of sins. Know her favorite flavor.
49. This day is coming soon. There’s nothing you can do to be ready for it. The sooner you accept this fact, the easier it will be.
50. Today she’s walking down the driveway to get on the school bus. Tomorrow she’s going off to college. Don’t blink.

All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth

Don't clench and or grind your teeth when you sleep, it is bad. Very, very BAD. I do and I know. I also wear a night guard, religiously but my clenching and grinding is so intense that it barely helps at all. In fact I have bitten clean through 2 of them.

Recently when I visited my new and fabulous dentist he said it was time to address the damage done to my teeth by the clenching and grinding. He wanted to bond them. I was actually happy to hear this, well other than the expense of it, because my front teeth were starting to look really horrid and I was getting very self conscious of them. I have a huge smile and I was starting to not smile as much.

I made the appointment but didn't quite make it until that day. yesterday I was doing something when I became very aware of something in my mouth. It was tooth enamel. EGADS. I was clenching in the middle of the day and had snapped my front tooth. I was mortified. Absolutely mortified. It was a clean break I had just weakened the tooth so much that a huge shard of enamel came off and it so obvious. I rang the dentist immediately, spent the rest of the day talking with my lip clamped between my tooth and counted down the hours until 9am today.

Woo Hoo, I have new teeth. Pretty new teeth that aren't all filled with grooves and cracks (god I made them sound ugly) and I can smile, big again. It's such a relief not to feel as if the world is staring a your wonky gnarly teeth. They are still my teeth it's just that now they are improved.

Vain, why yes I think I am. My brother has always said I am and I do believe he might be right!

Sorry, No I didn't take a photo of them but I am quite sure they will be making an appearance soon.

Oh and I have a new night guard being made...supposedly this one is new and improved......yeah right. Surely something must help this ridiculous habit.

It's really no fun constantly ruining teeth. Todays procedure was not without pain and no dental work over here is cheap, that's for sure.

Let me smile one more time

Humpf.

A few months Ages ago I noticed that my reading glasses were not performing as well as they once did. I tried to over compensate for this little problem by opening my eyes really really wide, or by turning on every single light in the room or any other strategy that I could find. Alas, it didn't work. I finally caved in and made an appointment with the eye Dr. I knew this would be just a routine exam with nothing out of the ordinary happening.

HAH! Dear eye doctor man had the balls to utter words such as, "over forty, middle age, and other obscenities". Just when I thought he was through with his tirade he actually used the word tri-focals. I nearly washed his mouth out with soap.

It would appear that my need for the occasional crutch when reading tiny little print has been replaced with the need to wear glasses all the freaking time. I may have just stared at the man for about 10 seconds completely speechless. It happened so fast. One minute I could see the leaves on the trees and the next I didn't realise I couldn't. Yes I know it sounds bad when I say it out loud but until I actually got my glasses I didn't realise what I was missing.

My sister nearly peed herself she laughed so hard when I told her I have tri-focals ( you can't see the lines in them they aren't totally old lady glasses). I can't wear contact lenses as I have a problem with one eye and the lenses are not an option. I have had them now for a few days and being able to see regardless of what I am doing is actually pretty freaking fabulous.

So there you have it. The first step into old ladyhood.

And now that I can see what I was missing the second step into old lady hood is an appointment with the dermatologist and then the plastic surgeon. I might not be able to change the inevitable but I can fight it every single step of the way! Take that middle age-ness.

20 Apr 2012

It's not about getting it done

I'm always about getting it done. Like most of us I always have a laundry list of things to do and never seem to get to the end of it because I always tack things on the bottom. Because I am Type A my list is nearly always self imposed. I have learnt to say no quite often to things I really don't want to do and to people that I really don't want to do them for. When I say I have a list I really do have a list. I write myself lists for everything.

Friday is pretty much my gettingeverysinglething done day. I usually don't work on Friday mornings so if I need to make an appointment today is the day. If I need to do those extra jobs, today is the day. My car has been looking like it went on a 60,000 mile road trip and having all the kiddies in it last weekend at the swim meet certainly didn't help it look any cleaner. The girls love to wash our cars and I usually wait until the weekends so that they can help. That is all good and well but it takes ages.

In order to get everything on my list accomplished I went ahead and detailed my car myself after I dropped them off at school this morning. I think I just taught myself a lesson. It probably took me just as long to do it alone. It is much easier for them to wiggle about under the seats with the vacuum than it is for me. I definitely didn't have as much fun by myself. I somehow managed to get just as wet even though a hosepipe fight never broke out. I missed their little shrieks of giggles as they somehow, accidentally on purpose, soaked someone and the last thing I learnt was my wheels just don't sparkle quite as much when I wash the car as they do when they have been scrubbed relentlessly for 20 minutes by 2 kids.

Life isn't always about reaching the finish line, it's about the journey (Even if it is just a simple task.) I think I need these words tattooed on my forehead. Ooohh, a tattoo, that would please my Father.

It's all my brothers doing

My brother is not at all materialistic and is also one of the greenist people I know and was long before any of us realised the importance of being good to our earth. He is constantly concerned about his carbon footprint.

Earlier this week he threw away a sweater, not just any sweater but one that our Mum had knitted for him some 25 years ago. He posted about it on Facebook and the comments he received ranged from hilarious to downright sad to one that even suggested he unravel it and re-knit another one. One friend said she wouldn't know him without that jumper and I have to admit that I am so used to seeing him in it that it will be odd to know it is gone. Parting with it was not an easy decision for him I am sure because he parts with NOTHING but more importantly our Mummy isn't with us anymore.

The parting of this sweater inspired me to go through my own closet. something that for me was long overdue. I haven't changed size in years. I have lost weight during stressful times and regained the same weight but never changed size so I have had the same clothes for years and years. Some clothes in my closet have been given to me and still have the tags on and will always have the tags on as long as they hang there. Many of my favourite clothes have past their expiry date but I can't part with them. Some of them should possibly never have been made. Most of my tops are white, in fact 90% of the tops on my closet are white and they won't change any time soon. Only 2 of the ones that went bye bye today were white but they were replaced with 2 white ones prior to the old ones leaving.

I have so many pairs of shoes that finding the matching ones each day causes so much frustration that family members have been known to run for cover. I got rid of some but also got some new ones first. I wasn't replacing item for item but I was replenishing my wardrobe. I got rid of tonnes of stuff and only got a couple of new bits.

I suddenly have loads of room in the closet and it feels fabulous. I can find things and that feels great. I know longer have to squeeze things in. I know longer have to look at things I don't really like, or cringe at things that people gave me and feel guilty for not wearing them. Oh and all the extra hangers, well that's just an added bonus. I hope all those black bags full of clothes make the people at G00dwill good and happy.

What will that green jumper inspire you to do?

Crazy old lady

I am writing this post because if I don't Lily or Jacob will.

On Saturday afternoon I ran to Ann Tayl0r L0ft to see if they had anything that I might actually like, for that evening. With Lily and Rosie as critics I tried on forty billion outfits and either felt, short, fat, frumpy, not nice etc etc until we all agreed that one outfit was perfect. I am not a clothes shopper. I wear my stuff forever. If I like something I buy it in every colour. That's just how I roll.

After whipping my dress on and off forty billion times so that I could go back out to the sales floor and find more possibilities I put it back on for the last time and headed towards the registers. Did I want to open and credit card, did I find everything OK, you no the shpeel. I handed over some money and we went directly outside to my car and (thankfully) headed straight home.

After being home for about 15 minutes Lily came over for a hug and stopped for a second and announced, Mummy, your dress looks weird.

I looked down and to my utter horror realised it was inside out. OMG! In my defence it is an easy dress to wear inside out and after whipping it on and off forty billion times I really wasn't paying attention, I was fried.

This is what the lady waiting behind me in line got to read
this is what the cashier was looking at
this is how I thought I looked....GAH

According to my husband and oldest daughter: It's official, I am a crazy old lady who wears her clothes inside out in PUBLIC.

Year of the Dragon

My family gets much joy out of the fact that I am a dragon in the Chinese Zodiac. Jake's a snake, Lily's a horse and Rosie is a pig. Mine is the only one that garners much attention.

This coming year is the year of the dragon. It's my year. In honour of this auspicious occasion we purchased a painting at the Beaux Festival of Art, today. The artist is a lady from Hong Kong. I first noticed a huge painting of a dragon and it was fantastic but the price was a little out of our league by a few thousand dollars. She then suggested I look at another one...I had to have it. I absolutely love it.

Now we are planning on getting her versions of all the rest of our zodiac signs, But the dragon is by far the best!
