Enjoying the Outdoors.

Ahhh, the steamy hot weather has subsided and we can now enjoy being outdoors.
This morning Lily had a riding lesson and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that it was not 90〫as she had a hard lesson and had to work really hard to get her horse to cooperate. Usually after a lesson like that she would be soaked with sweat but not today. Today she was just hot.

I love this photo of her and Albert saddling up. This was Albert's horse but he asked Lily to help him. It's good for her to work with many different horses.

I never remember to get photos of her working I only take photos of her riding. She was so happy that she could finally reach the horses head ☺

I invited this little boy to come with us to see the foal. He is now Rosie's friend, Steven.

Yes, she loves to ride too. I'm doomed.

After lunch and a nap for Rosie the girls wanted to head out to the park. I thought it was a fabulous idea and upped the anti by taking their bikes.

Lily chose her scooter instead of her bike and loved the freedom of the bike path.

Holiday Photo Time.....again

Every year during October I realise that we need to get our family photos taken in time for the holidays. The first year we did it with Rosie it was hilarious and we must have taken well over 100 shots and only ended up with 2 mediocre photos. Last year I just used some that I had taken myself and they were OK but this year I knew we wanted something better. Don't tell anyone but we haven't had a professional family portrait done since Rosie came home...gasp. All the family photos that are framed are sans the Peanut.

One of our friends dabbles in photography as a hobby. He truly is incredible and has won many awards. You can see his work for yourself here. Richard doesn't take "people" pictures, they are not his thing. A few weeks ago he offered to take some of the girls and we jumped on the offer. I have just spent the last 2 weeks trying to choose a favourite. I think it is this one.

But it might be this one. ( I haven't seen the touched up version of this one yet.

How on earth are you supposed to choose? There were loads and loads of them and I wanted one of each, which of course Richard was fine with but I have to narrow it down to one big one for framing.

Calling In The Big Guns.

I believe and this is just my own personal feeling, that the worst feeling in the world is not being able to help your children. I know that my sister can contest to this.

Rosie has always been an anxious child. In the beginning just about any situation outside of our home was too much for her. She withdrew and became very clingy. We kept all outside stimulation to a minimum. It wasn't fun but it had to be done for our daughter. Slowly but surely Rosie was able to take on more and more, yet certain situations were still triggers so we would talk her through them or sometimes just avoid them entirely. Ergo's were her comfort zone and her stroller was a close second.

She has never ever been completely comfortable when she is away from us and by away I don't mean under the charge of someone else but rather, in another room. All is right in Rosie's world when she has her immediate family right. next. to. her. side.

As time has passed she had become more comfortable but note that I used the past tense. Approximately 2 weeks ago Rosie's anxiety came back but this time it was worse than ever. Now she cannot bare to be away from me, at all, for one second. Our routine has always been the same and nothing has changed in it. Nothing appears to have provoked this but it is happening and to see our daughter go through this is so very painful. Yesterday she nearly vomited when she realised I was not going with Lily, Jacob and her on a play date. That's how bad it has become. Every single night she has nightmares where she yells out, please don't leave me or don't take me, no no no.

This is not normal and we won't stand back and watch her suffer. The Rosie that you see on the blog or see in person when we are with you is not the same Rosie that is being tortured by this constant thought that she is going to be abandoned.....again. Please don't sit on your high horse and tell us that she doesn't remember her life in China as she clearly does. She makes comments that rip deep into our hearts. Don't tell me she has to get used to being apart from me because I know this but she doesn't have any inkling of how to do this.

Jacob and I have done every thing we can think of to help her, she takes my photo with her, she gets a note from me (that was her own request), she wears something of mine every day we are apart but none, NONE, of it is working. We have decided that it is time to call in a therapist to help her work this out. Her school is on board with us and couldn't be more helpful. The director is also implementing steps to help her and her teacher is acting like her very own Grandparent. We have learnt so much in just a couple of days.

I will be spending time with Rosie in school and slowly we will transition me to the bench outside her classroom. This cracks Lily up as she loves the idea of me being benched. Lily has given her one side of a heart necklace to wear whilst she wears the other half. It not just Jacob and i that she missed but Lily as well. As much as she misses me the most she also needs her Daddy and Big Lily.

We have discovered that emotionally Rosie is at a 2 yr old level whereas mentally she is above average. She is exhibiting the behaviours of a child a year younger than she is. She checks on me constantly when we are in the house. If she is in a different room she calls my name calmly and if I don't hear her the second time she calls me it is with her voice filled with panic and fear.

Now we have lots of games to play. The most important is hide and seek. Mummy hides and she has to find me. Mummy is gone but only for a minute. We then explain that is just like at school or when I go to work. She can always find me because we are a family and families are forever. Monotony is the name of the game around here LOL. This will all take time and will probably take longer than we hope but we are in this for the long haul.

If you ring me and I don't answer it is because I am either on the bench, or hiding under a bed!

My father thinks therapist are foolish. How can someone else who doesn't even know you solve your problems? To him I say, I don't work on my own car and I definitely don't practice surgery on myself I turn to people who are adequately trained and with years of experience. I am not trained in psychology so I am turning to someone who is.

Together we will chase away these demons, once.and.for.all.

I am sharing this because if anyone is going through this with a child they are not alone and if they want to talk they can email me or leave a comment.

Happy go lucky Rosie at home!

Twick Or Tweat.

Twick or Tweat is Rosies way of saying those infamous 3 words that produce candy! Both girls had a lot of fun last night and even though we only went to houses of people that we know they still managed to fill up their buckets to the top. I even had to "reuse" some when we ran out. Some snot face kid or kids decided it would be fun to take the candy and the bowl so when we got home I had to re-do it all. Thankfully I had plenty and it wasn't until after 9pm that we ran out completely.

There were not as many big kids this year as in the past and that worked really well for Rosie as she gets so scared. Lily also enjoyed walking around the neigbourhood with Daddy, while Rosie and I stayed home.

My little trick or treaters.

Ready to go
Lets go Mummy.

Carving Pumpkins

This morning the girls got to carve the 2 tiny weiny pumpkins that they bought yesterday. I absolutely detest the smell and feel of pumpkins so Daddy has to do this job. This is the first time Lily has ever done the carving herself. She felt so big. Jacob helped Rosie but she still thought she was doing it and was very proud. She even took the magic marker and drew her own face.....when we weren't paying attention.

A Plethora Of Pumpkins

Golly I just love pumpkin patches. We didn't have Halloween in the UK when I was growing up, it was starting to get big when I was in my late teens but still nothing compared to over here. I had some American friends who explained what they used to do, so a friend and I tried it, very unsuccessfully. We dressed up and went to our first house, knocked on the door and when the man answered we said, TRICK OR TREAT. He looked at us and told us to go home! We did, and giggled the whole way there!

Since Lily has been very under the weather we have not had a chance to take both girls to the pumpkin patch together so this evening I took them both. Rosie was very happy to have Big Lily with her at her school and even happier when we went nowhere near a classroom.

Lily preferred all the unusual shaped ones.

Rosie showing her superhuman strength

The pumpkins are sprouting
We bumped into our friends the "K's" and which was a lovely surprise
Can we have these, please?
Awwww

Apparently choosing the perfect pumpkin is arduous work and Lily nearly needed a respite
Happy girl
Crazy child is trying to fly, it's her latest wish.
I just love all the colours and shapes
Is that the Pumkin Patch Fairy?

Both the girls picked a pumpkin and I think they set records for the tiniest ones ever. Once they are decorated I will post photos.
I find the carving of pumpkins to be utterly revolting so I save that honour for Daddy.

Happy Halloween (well, not so happy)

Today Rosie was having a Halloween party at school. She was quite excited about it and helped me to prepare the goody bags, chose the food she wanted to take and was very happy with her costume choice. Taking all of that into consideration you would think it would have been a banner day at school, no? And lets not forget Mummy and Daddy were invited to be at school all morning.

Here is cowgirl Rosie all ready to go to school. Notice the smiles cos this is the last time you will see them!
Here she is at school with "friend" and not looking very happy.

And here she is with her teacher and she's bawling her little heart out. (such a party animal)

After a quick dance session and a Halloween story it was time to get the party started with a little parade and some trick or treating. Is that a slight smile I detect or is it a grimace? Nope, it's a tiny bit of a smile.

After the parade we all went to the Fellowship Hall for a dance party and some Halloween songs. Rosie cried the whole time. She really doesn't like noise and it was noisy. She doesn't like a lot of people and it was full of people. She kept asking to go home. It was heartbreaking. Thankfully Daddy showed up a few minutes later and once we got back to her classroom she saw him and that helped.
Class Photo
Waiting for her food. All the kids were having a Happy Meal. Rosie has never had McD0nalds before....
This is what she thought of it. LOL
Finally we told her it was time to go home.....see that smile!

I'm hoping the rest of the weekends festivities don't upset her this much!
Having a child who is as sensitive as Rosie is so hard. One the one hand you want to cry with them but on the other, you know you have to toughen them. It's like walking a tight rope. I hate to see her so uncomfortable but she was with me the whole time it's not as if I dropped her off and left. Sigh. It's looking like a double chocolate day in this house.
