Greatness

Being here is very surreal and awe inspiring. None of us can believe that we climbed the Great Wall Of China, today. It is really rather humbling to see such a magnificent wonder.
We purchased our marriage lock and had it engraved with all of our names and then headed towards the stairs. Nobody has ever mentioned before that the steps are all different sizes. Some of them are low and then the next one is about knee high, it makes any sort of rhythm utterly impossible. To begin with we all climbed together but it wasn't long before lily was proving her fitness level and somehow I got voted in to keep up with her. She really impressed me as she shot up the bloody stairs with me breaking my neck to keep up with her. It wasn't long before Jacobs gammy knee started to act up and that was followed a few minutes later with Andie saying her ankle was hurting so Lily and I soldered on. At this point we were only 4 out of 10 in our group that were still going. Suddenly andie reappeared stating she could not be beat by a 5 yr old. We hailed for Jacob to meet us and he crawled up because Lily had found the spot where she wanted to attach our lock and there was no way I could reach. Going down is much harder than going up but we made it back to the bottom safe and sound.

We also went to a jade factory and managed quite a bit of shopping and then to the Cloisonne factory where more purchases happened. Lunch was really impressive as well today and not quite as scary as yesterday. We also saw the Olympic village which pales in comparison to everything else we have witnessed. I have no idea how on earth they are going to get it finished in time as it is nothing more than a huge construction site.

One of our favourite things to do in the early evening is to pick a location and jump in a cab. The driving here is nuts and the cabbies have a death wish. We put Jacob in the front seat and then we sit in the back laughing and giggling like a bunch of teenagers. This evening we saw a man on his bike carrying 2 mattresses a sofa, a table and a load of other stuff. I think it is a very cheap way to move house.

We only have 2 more days here and then it is off to Guangzhou to meet little miss cuteness.

Here are some photos of the day.

This is one of my favourite shots of the whole trip. Lily loves it to cos it has "our" Andie in it.

I love reading your posts because this is the part of our China trip we missed out on. I hope to someday get back there and walk that Great Wall of China myself with Miss Maddy leading the way.
